Drones attacked the Bashneft oil refining complex in Ufa on 21 September
On the morning of 21 September 2026, drones attacked oil-refining infrastructure in Ufa, one of Russia’s largest oil-processing centres.
Explosions were reported in the northern industrial district, where the Bashneft group of refineries is located. A column of smoke was recorded over the industrial zone after the attack.
The Ufa oil refining complex lies approximately 1,600 kilometres from Ukraine’s state border.
Bashneft oil refining complex in Ufa
Bashneft’s Ufa refining complex includes three adjacent facilities: Bashneft-Novoil, Bashneft-UNPZ and Bashneft-Ufaneftekhim.
Their combined processing capacity exceeds 23 million tonnes of crude oil a year. The plants produce petrol, diesel and aviation fuel, lubricants and other petroleum products.
Preliminary reports indicate that Bashneft-Novoil may have been the target. Because the three facilities are located next to each other, the specific refinery cannot yet be identified reliably. The incident is therefore counted as one strike on the Bashneft refining complex; the facility name will be updated if reliable geolocation or an official Ukrainian statement becomes available.
Results of the 21 September strike
The Ufa attack came one day after the major strike on the Moscow refinery in Kapotnya. In September, Ukrainian long-range systems also struck refineries in Yaroslavl, Syzran, Saratov, Nizhnekamsk and Slavyansk-on-Kuban.
Under the Demilitarizator methodology, the Ufa refining complex is counted as one new strike on 21 September. No other strategic targets struck that day had been documented with sufficient reliability when this report was prepared.
The updated totals are at least 821 strikes in 2026 and 34 in September, including at least 98 refinery and gas-processing targets.
