A fire was recorded at the Sasta machine-tool factory in Sasovo, Ryazan Oblast, beside a Yandex data centre. In Bashkortostan, reports described explosions and a fire near the Gazprom Neftekhim Salavat oil refining complex.
OSINT channels published footage of explosions and fires. Reports of the attack on Sasovo coincided with news of disruptions to Yandex Cloud.
A strike on the Omsk refinery was confirmed during the day on 8 October. Ukraine’s General Staff and Unmanned Systems Forces also confirmed the overnight attack on the Salavat refinery. The General Staff reported further military targets hit on 7 October and overnight into 8 October.
Sasta factory fire: machine tools for Russia’s defence industry
A large fire broke out in Sasovo following reports of an attack. According to Astra’s OSINT analysis, published photographs and video locate the fire on the grounds of the Sasta factory.
The company manufactures high-precision computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools, including machining centres and turning and milling equipment. Its products are used in Russia’s defence, aerospace and other industrial sectors.
Sasta’s importance to military production lies in the machine tools used to manufacture complex metal parts and assemblies. The company previously supplied equipment to entities within Tactical Missiles Corporation and Roscosmos. Sasta PJSC is also subject to international sanctions.
Yandex data centre in Sasovo: reports of Yandex Cloud outages
The Yandex DC Sasovo data centre is located on the same industrial site. Following the overnight attack, reports emerged of disrupted power supplies and parts of Yandex Cloud infrastructure becoming unavailable.
Published reports said the problems affected computing resources, networks, storage, databases and other cloud services.
For users and businesses, these disruptions can mean losing access to websites, applications and work systems that depend on cloud infrastructure.
Ukraine’s General Staff and drone forces confirm the Salavat refinery strike
