Kstovo oil refinery strike: what is known about the fire
After the overnight attack, Kstovo residents posted footage of explosions and a fire. Ukrainian monitoring channels identified Lukoil’s oil refinery as the facility hit.
Several areas of the plant are on fire.
Why the Kstovo oil refinery matters to Russia
Lukoil-Nizhegorodnefteorgsintez, also known as NORSI, is one of Russia’s largest oil refineries. Its design capacity is approximately 17 million tonnes of crude oil a year.
The refinery produces petrol, diesel, aviation fuel and other petroleum products. A strike on a plant of this scale affects fuel production serving transport, industry and military logistics.
